Various poker games are played around the world, but in general, there are some basic rules that are applied to all games. However, the specifics of a game’s rules can vary by region or country. Typically, a poker player will bet according to their hand rank. Some variations of the game may award the pot to the lowest hand, while others split the pot between the highest and lowest hands. A poker hand is generally made up of five cards. A pair is a two card hand containing two cards of the same suit. A straight is a series of five consecutive cards of different suits.

The first round of betting involves the player who is dealt the best cards face up. They must then show their hand, while the other players discard some of their cards.
